The jewel of the Arctic – the eternal summer twilight.
In the Lofoten Islands, Norway, light becomes an experience in its own right. Between May and July, the sun never truly disappears: it skims the horizon without setting, casting a soft, low-lying glow with an otherworldly quality. At two o’clock in the morning, the fjords are bathed in a golden glow, and the fishing villages with their red-fronted houses are reflected in a still sea, like a silver mirror.
Here, everything seems suspended. It lingers, it transforms, caressing the peaks, brushing against the rorbuers – those charming cabins on stilts – and bringing every moment to life as a living tableau. On the agenda: sailing in the dead of night as if in broad daylight, walks bathed in golden light, dinners without watching the clock… A rare, almost hypnotic interlude, where nature redefines the perception of time.
On the edge of the spectacular
In Iceland, the light is a constant spectacle. Ever-changing, dramatic, almost theatrical, it is omnipresent in summer. A ray of light suddenly pierces the clouds above a waterfall, a lava field glows in the distance, and at midnight, the mist takes on an otherworldly pink hue. It constantly reshapes the landscape, revealing captivating contrasts and accentuating the raw power of the elements. Between hot baths in the heart of nature, helicopter flights and photographic explorations, every moment becomes an immersion in a constantly shifting setting. Certain stops offer a cocoon whose openings capture the silhouettes of the surrounding glaciers and valleys. The hues of sky and earth extend into the interior, enveloping each room in a fluid, lived-in atmosphere. Even in the dead of night, shapes and colours continue to interact with the space, as if the landscape were endlessly renewing itself.
In the wake of reflections at the heart of Hellas
In Greece, light stands out as a substance in its own right. It carves out the landscape, glides over immaculate villages, catches the azure domes and reveals, with an almost unreal precision, the deep hues of the sea. It constantly redraws the contours, accentuates the contrasts and creates a dense, almost tactile clarity that gives these places a unique presence.
From one island to the next, it changes in rhythm and texture. On Folegandros, it takes on a more mineral quality, capturing the sheer cliffs and villages suspended in an almost raw silence. On Koufonissia, it becomes fluid, passing through translucent waters and revealing secret coves reached on foot or by sea. As one travels further into the archipelago, Paros and Milos offer a more nuanced palette: houses opening out onto the open sea, discreet tables facing the water, voyages along the contours sculpted by the light. Here, each island offers its own variation, its own harmony — like so many interpretations of the same light.
